How this ppf calculator works

At the beginning of each modeled year, the yearly contribution is added to the balance. Annual interest is then applied to that total. This models a contribution made before 5 April.

Worked example

A ₹1.5 lakh contribution made at the beginning of every year for 15 years at a constant 7.1% assumption produces total deposits of ₹22.5 lakh and an estimated maturity value of about ₹40.68 lakh.

Assumptions

  • Each annual deposit is made before 5 April.
  • The selected interest rate remains constant for illustration.
  • Interest is credited annually.
  • Extensions are represented in five-year blocks.

Limitations

  • The Government of India can revise the PPF rate quarterly.
  • Actual interest depends on contribution dates and applicable rules.
  • Withdrawals, loans and missed or smaller deposits are not modeled.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard PPF term?

A PPF account has a 15-year maturity framework under current rules, with extension options subject to applicable conditions.

Why does contribution timing matter?

Interest is based on eligible balances under PPF rules, so an early contribution can earn interest for more of the year.

Is the PPF rate fixed for 15 years?

No. The government notifies rates periodically, so a constant rate is only an estimate.

What is the annual contribution limit?

The calculator currently allows up to ₹1.5 lakh, but you should verify current official rules before contributing.

Is PPF interest tax-free?

Tax treatment is subject to current law and personal circumstances; verify the rules applicable to you.

Can I calculate a 20-year period?

Yes. The calculator supports five-year increments after the initial 15 years.

Does the estimate include withdrawals?

No. It assumes contributions remain invested throughout the selected period.
